Behaviour support for young people in Green Valley

Green Valley has a long history as a home for families. Built as a Housing Commission estate in the early 1960s, it was the largest single housing scheme attempted in Australia at the time, and many of its curving streets carry Aboriginal names. Today it is a diverse, family-centred suburb: at the 2021 Census, 14.6% of its 12,919 residents were aged 10 to 19.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is for young people whose behaviour is making life harder for them or for the people around them. We start by understanding what the behaviour is communicating, whether that is overwhelm, avoiding something too hard, a need for connection, or a response to past trauma. Then we build skills and supports so the young person has better options.

A plan the whole family can be part of

Green Valley is one of the most multilingual suburbs in Sydney. At the 2021 Census, only 27.5% of residents spoke only English at home. Vietnamese, Arabic, Hindi, Assyrian and Spanish were among the most common other languages.

Behaviour support only works when the family is part of it. We take time to understand your family’s culture, values and routines, and we will talk with you about the best way to communicate, so parents and carers can understand the plan and use it with confidence.

Working with local schools

Young people from Green Valley attend schools such as James Busby High School, which serves the Green Valley community, and Hoxton Park High School nearby. With consent, we meet the school team, help teachers understand what the young person needs, and coach staff so strategies are used the same way at school and at home.

Where sessions happen

We come to the young person. In Green Valley, that might be at home, at school, or at the Green Valley District Centre on Wilson Road, which includes a library and a youth centre, next to Valley Plaza. A familiar setting helps young people relax and engage.

Easy to reach

The T80 T-way bus between Liverpool and Parramatta stops in Green Valley and runs frequently, so the wider area is well connected. Because our practitioner travels to you, though, you do not need to get anywhere for sessions.

Local supports that can work alongside PBS

Free services like headspace Liverpool and Liverpool City Council’s youth programs for ages 12 to 24 can sit alongside behaviour support. With consent, we coordinate with the rest of your young person’s team.

Behaviour support in Green Valley is led by Yosmerys Aparicio Cuencas, an NDIS behaviour support practitioner with eight-plus years of frontline experience across disability, out-of-home care and community services.

How it works

From first call to a plan that holds.

1

Referral and getting to know the young person

What's being asked, how it's funded, consent, and time to understand the young person: their strengths, what a good day looks like, how they communicate, their health and sensory needs. Rapport comes first.

2

Functional behaviour assessment

Conversations with the young person, family, school and support team, records, observation and simple data, to understand what the behaviour is doing for them.

3

Interim plan, if needed

Within one month when there is an immediate need: safety, changes to the environment, and calm ways for adults to respond.

4

Comprehensive behaviour support plan

Within six months: the full picture, skills to teach with clear steps, proactive and response strategies, and a data plan a real team can keep up with.

5

Coaching and review

We model and coach the plan with family, carers, school and support workers until it holds, and review it at least every 12 months, or sooner if things change.

FAQ

Common questions about PBS in Green Valley.

Do you provide behaviour support in Green Valley?

Yes. We are based in Liverpool and work only with young people aged 12 to 20 across Green Valley and the surrounding suburbs. Sessions happen at home, at school or in the community.

English isn't our first language at home. Can you still help?

Yes. Most families in Green Valley speak another language at home, including Vietnamese, Arabic, Hindi, Assyrian and Spanish. Tell us how your family prefers to communicate and we will plan around that so you are fully part of the process.

Can you work with James Busby High School or Hoxton Park High School?

With your consent, we can work with whichever school your young person attends. We meet the school team, share strategies that work, and help keep the response consistent between home and school.

Where would sessions happen?

At home, at school, or in local community places like the Green Valley District Centre, which has a library and youth centre. We choose a setting where the young person feels relaxed.

Do you take referrals from DCJ and support coordinators?

Yes. Support coordinators, DCJ caseworkers and out-of-home care agencies can refer directly, and we work with foster, kinship and residential carers as one team.

How is behaviour support funded by the NDIS?

It is paid from the Behaviour Support budget in the young person's NDIS plan (called Improved Relationships on older plans). If it is not in the plan yet, we can help you ask for it at plan review.

Who delivers behaviour support at SCA?

Yosmerys Aparicio Cuencas, an NDIS behaviour support practitioner who works only with young people aged 12 to 20. She does the functional behaviour assessment, writes the plan and coaches the family, school and support workers who use it.
